Man Arrested For Throwing 'Black Magic' Bundle Inside Azam Khan's House

SP leader Azam Khan's wife has lodged a police complaint against an unidentified man alleging that he threw a small bundle inside the main gate of her house containing random articles, including clothes, and expressed fear that it may be associated with "black magic".

Police said they have arrested the man who is mentally challenged and also suspended four of its personnel -- deployed outside Khan's house -- for dereliction of duty.

Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Shukla said, "A mentally challenged person was responsible for throwing a bundle inside the house of Azam Khan. He has been arrested and efforts are being made to send him to a mental institution." "Four police personnel deployed in the security at the house of Azam Khan were suspended for dereliction of duty," added the SP.

According to the complaint filed by Tazeen Fatma, a former MP, the incident happened around 6 am on Thursday.

The man throwing the bundle inside was captured on CCTV installed outside the house but could not be recognised immediately.

Fatma wrote a letter to the Rampur superintendent of police reporting the incident and expressed fear that it could be a part of a big conspiracy.

In her letter, Fatma also wondered how could such a breach take place when the house is guarded round the clock by state police and other security personnel.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sansar Singh said they were informed late Thursday that a bundle, wrapped in black foil, had been thrown inside Khan's residence and it contained some clothes, a cap, and a few other articles.

Khan has been an MP from Rampur parliamentary constituency and MLA from Rampur assembly constituency 10 times. His assembly membership ended after a local court sentenced him in a hate speech case.

He also has several criminal cases registered against him and was released from jail after getting bail last year.

"For Nurturing Its Politics...": Trinamool Attacks BJP Over Howrah Clashes

A day after clash erupted between two groups amid Ram Navami celebrations in Howrah, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday, launched a fresh round of attacks on the Bharatiya Janata Party for "spoiling" the atmosphere in the state and creating "enmity" among the people.

Addressing a press conference, here on Friday, Abhishek Banerjee, said, "For the past few days, there have been attempts to disrupt the peace and harmony in Bengal. We have appealed to everyone to maintain peace and order".

"Despite that, a political party, for nurturing its politics, despite having no police permission, vehemently took out the procession on a route where issues happened last year as well," he added.

During the press conference, the TMC MP also showed several videos, where some people with 'saffron' flags and chanting "Jai Shri Ram" slogans were purportedly seen torching and ransacking properties.

Banerjee said, "People were carrying guns and swords in the Ram Navami procession. Shops and materials of small vendors were vandalised. What form of a procession is this? Insanely playing DJ and worshipping Ram is which ritual? We have lived in Bengal for so long, never seen anything like this. I might be lying, but these videos won't lie".

He accused BJP of creating enmity among people and forcefully imposing their "culture" on Bengal.

"Such incidents didn't happen in the 2011-2016 period. It started after they (BJP) came in power at the centre and won three seats in the Bengal Assembly. They started treating the whole state as their personal property. Creating enmity among people of different communities, forcefully imposing their culture on the people of Bengal and shamelessly reaping political fruits out of it," Banerjee said.

The TMC leader said further 'challenged' BJP to call out for the arrest of those being seen doing violence in the said videos.

"I am clearly saying here that those who have done violence, whether they are from any religion, or political party, strict action will be taken against them. But I would like to challenge BJP if any of their leaders come and says on record, that they want those people under arrest who are seen setting properties of poor people on fire and dancing with weapons. I challenge them. Our Chief Minister has appealed to people to keep harmony, but has the BJP leader given any statement even after 24 hours?" Banerjee added.

He alleged that the incidents of violence were "pre-planned" in nature.

"This was pre-planned. From Shyambazar, a BJP leader was saying to keep eye on TV tomorrow. Why? Just a day before, that leader met with the Home Minister and came to Shyambazar," he said.

He further added, "There was no reply to Howrah Police Commissionerate regarding details of permission copy, the exact number of participants and exact beginning and end of the rally. They did not submit any documents but started taking out a procession on the route which was not permitted".

The TMC leader added that if there is any lapse on the police side, they will be booked and action will be taken against them, as the Chief Minister said.

Earlier in the day, the situation turned violent in the Shibpur area of Howrah, after fresh violence broke out here on Friday a day after arson on 'Ram Navami'.

This came after two groups clashed on Thursday in Howrah amid Ram Navami celebrations. During the procession, the rioters vandalized public and private properties and set vehicles on fire.

After the disruptions, West Bengal Police on Thursday conducted a flag march in Howrah where violence broke out during a Ram Navami procession.

Police on Thursday arrested the Station House Officer (SHO) of City Police Station in Nuh for allegedly raping a 45-year-old woman several times over the last one month.

The woman alleged that SHO Bijender Rathee raped her several times in his home and even at the police station. The matter was booked at Women Police Station, Nuh.

SHO Rathee has been suspended pending a departmental inquiry, police said.

According to the victim's complaint, she had gone to the City Police Station about a month and a half ago to report a matter of fraud.

Nothing Wrong In Caring For Endangered Species: Minister Amid Crane Row

There is nothing wrong in caring for an endangered species but one should inform the authorities about it, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Thursday, responding to a question on Uttar Pradesh forest department filing a case against a man for allegedly "illegally" keeping and nursing an injured Sarus crane.

Arif Khan Gurjar, 35, a resident of Mandkha village of Amethi district, rescued the Sarus crane and took care of it for a year, according to officials.

The crane lived with Arif and accompanied him to his fields. However, forest department officials took it away on March 21.

While the man has been booked under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the Sarus crane has been placed in a zoo, after it struggled to survive in the wild.

"Even if we are caring for an endangered species, we need to inform authorities. There is nothing wrong in caring for endangered species. It's our responsibility," the minister said at 'News 18 Rising India' programme here.

A day after the bird was taken away, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav held a press conference during which he condemned the forest department action and asked indirectly if any official had the courage to take away the peacocks at the prime minister's residence.

The minister added that action in the matter has been taken in accordance with the local law.

BJP's Amit Malviya Gets Legal Notice Over Tweet Against Congress Leader

Youth Congress national president BV Srinivas on Wednesday sent a legal notice to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya over the controversial tweet.

Advocate Mareesh Sahay in his legal notice, said that it is a well-known fact that the comments made by Amit Malviya on social media for abusing and tarnishing the image of BV Srinivas publicly based on wrong facts and with malicious intent.

"That the said statements made by you not only are of bad taste, and ill-willed but violate the provisions of Section 66E, 66A, 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and Section 499, 34, 44, 120, 500 of IPC, 1860," he added.

The notice was sent after Mr Malviya tweeted a video of Mr Srinivas, accusing the Karnataka-based leader of using sexist remarks against Union Minister Smriti Irani.

"This uncouth, sexist man is President of the Indian Youth Congress. Darling bana kar bedroom mein... This is the level of discourse, when referring to a woman minister, just because she defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. A frustrated Congress is hurtling down the path of irrelevance [sic]," Mr Malviya in a tweet on March 27 had said.

The tweet was shared with a video clip of BV Srinivas.

Mr Malviya, through the legal notice, was also asked to publicly apologise to BV Srinivas over the tweet. The Youth Congress said it would otherwise make a legal move.

The alleged remarks were made by Mr Srinivas at the Sankalp Satyagrah organised by the Congress at the Rajghat to protest against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP following a Surat court in a defamation case against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reacting to his tweet, Mr Srinivas tweeted the legal notice sent to Mr Malviya and said, "It's high time to install anti-malware to fight against the World's biggest Fake news factory and its chief."

However, the legal notice sent to Malaviya said that Mr Srinivas is a well-known politician and enjoys a considerable reputation owing to his work during the Covid pandemic.

"He is also known as the 'Oxygen Man of India. It is a well-known fact that the comments made by you on social media are based on wrong information and were made with malicious intent," the notice further stated, adding that the statements made by Malaviya violate provisions of Section 66E, 66A, 67 of Information Technology Act 2000 and Section 499, 34, 44, 120, and 500 of the IPC.

The notice also accuses Malviya of aiming to defame BV Srinivas in connivance with other members of his party, the BJP and of having made baseless claims on social media platforms, like Twitter earlier also.

After his remarks about Smriti Irani stirred up a controversy, Srinivas BV on Monday said that when the price of a gas cylinder was Rs 400, she used to talk about 'mehangayi daayan' and now when the price has reached Rs 1,100, that 'daayan' has now become a darling adding that this is what he said and what was wrong in it?

"Boycott Scriptures Which Advocate Women Harassment": AAP MLA

AAP MLA Rajendra Pal Gautam on Wednesday demanded that society boycott religious scriptures which advocate women harassment, prompting angry reaction from the Delhi BJP which said his comments exposed "anti-Hindu face of the AAP government".

During a discussion on women security in the Delhi Assembly in view of Tuesday's incident at Indraprastha College for Women where several men scaled the college walls and harassed students, Mr Gautam said, "The issue of women harassment is connected to religious scriptures which contain bad words about women and their character." "A religious scripture which is worshipped by some people in India and which remained at the centre of discussions recently puts women, animal and shudras in the same league and demands that they be beaten up," Mr Gautam said.

"Everyone should unite and boycott all such scriptures which advocate women harassment and discriminate among people," he said.

Hitting back, Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the remark "exposed the anti-Hindu face of Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party".

He demanded that Chief Minister Kejriwal immediately clarify the stand of his party on Mr Gautam's statement.

If the Chief Minister does not agree with the views of Rajendra Pal Gautam, he should immediately expel him from the Delhi Assembly and the AAP, Mr Shankar said.

"Former minister Rajendra Pal Gautam called for the boycott of pious Hindu scripture Shri Ramcharitmanas and not even a single MLA of the ruling party opposed him," he said in a statement.

He alleged that Mr Gautam has been running an "anti-Hindu campaign for the last six months" and that the "anti-Hindu poster boy of the AAP has hidden support of Kejriwal".

Mr Gautam had to resign from his ministerial post in October last year, amid a controversy over his presence at a religious conversion event where Hindu deities were allegedly denounced.

Sharjeel Imam's Speech At Jamia University Was "Provocative": Court

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday said that the speech of Sharjeel Imam at Jamia on December 13 in 2019 was "provocative" and shows that he was also a part of the mob which was instigating and provoking.

The High Court said on Tuesday in judgement against the order of the trial court order discharging him and ten others.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said that his speech at Jamia University which was provocative shows that he was also part of the mob which was instigating and provoking which he also admitted on January 16 in 2020 in his speech at Aligarh Muslim University.

The bench noted that during the investigation, the second supplementary chargesheet clearly mentions that the accused Sharjeel Imam had on December 13 in 2019 given a provocative speech at Jamia University.

The court said that his speech indicates that Sharjeel Imam had stated that they were distributing the pamphlets regarding the protest, and he himself talked about 'destruction' and also said that those who were protesting should know what they should do for the protests and should be ready to take blows of lathis.

"He can be clearly seen instigating the mob and preparing them for further action, and he said that on December 13, 2019, there were 3000 to 4000 persons gathered at the spot as they had been distributing pamphlets for the last two weeks, and thus, it can only be imagined as to how many people could gather on the day of jumma (Friday) next week," the court noted.

It is, thus, clear that he had a common intention and that he was part of the overall intent and object of the unlawful assembly, justice Sharma held.

Advocate Talib Mustafa, counsel for Sharjeel Imam had stated that there was nothing on record to show that Sharjeel Imam was part of the alleged rioting mob on the day of the incident as there were no photographs or video or any eyewitnesses to support the case of the prosecution.

It was argued that Sharjeel Imam only campaigned in favour of peaceful protests and not violence, and he was himself a victim of violence on the day of the incident as his spectacles were broken during the course of protests.

It was also contended that he had left the place of the incident within a short period of time and was not a part of the assembly which may have turned unlawful later on as can also be inferred from his CDRs.

On the issue of speeches delivered by him, it was submitted that the speech on December 13 in 2019 was delivered at around 7:30 PM which was much later than the incident of violence and the same was a subject matter of another FIR and could not be considered in the present case.

It was further argued that the speech delivered on January 16 in 2020 at Aligarh Muslim University would only show that he campaigned in favour of chakka jaam which is not a violent means of protest.

It was stated on behalf of Asif Iqbal Tanha that there is no allegation of rioting against him levelled by any of the witnesses, and he was also not a part of the videos and photographs relied upon by the prosecution on the basis of which other seven respondents were identified by the witnesses.

The bench rejected this contention and said that during the investigation, it was revealed that Asif Iqbal Tanha had posted photographs on his Facebook account on December 13 last year, the third anniversary of the Jamia violence incident.

He had written that he was detained at PS Badarpur along with his associates and had himself admitted that they were stopped by police while they were marching to Parliament, and he had also posted a photograph showing that he was in the custody of police in a bus, the court added.

The said post, containing photographs and videos of the day of the incident, is still visible on the Facebook account of the respondent. In the photographs posted by himself, he can be seen to be a part of unlawful assembly, which he does not deny, the court held.

It was submitted on behalf of Safoora Zargar that she was not named in the FIR, nor in the charge sheet of March 30, 2020.

It was alleged that she was seen standing near the barricades, outside Jamia University and was one of the rioters.

Three-fold arguments were addressed by the senior counsel.

It was first contended that prosecution has to cross the 'threshold of identification' and the respondent has been allegedly identified by the witnesses from video clip number 9, but a bare perusal of that video would show that a person, whose face is covered, has been identified as Safoora Zargar.

The court rejected the contention and said that this Court has seen video clip number 9 since the contention of the learned Senior counsel was that the woman, who is seen in a muffled face as part of the mob, could not have been identified by anyone as her face is not clearly visible.

The court pointed out that the Senior counsel, however, has not stated that the said woman in the video is not a part of the violent mob.

It is admitted case of the respondent that she is a student of the university in question. A caretaker on the University campus and the other employee whose designation has been reflected as a peon, have stated in their statements under section 161 Cr.P.C. that since they see the students frequenting the canteen regularly, they were able to identify her, though she was wearing a mask and had her face covered, the court held.

Furthermore, a perusal of video clip number 9 would also show that this is not a case where no overt act can be attributed to the present respondent as the video clip clearly reveals that the woman who is in the mask, identified by the public witnesses who are employees of the concerned university to be respondent, can be seen to be at the forefront of a violent mob which is pushing and throwing the barricades including her, which by no stretch of imagination can be said to be a protest by peaceful means, the court added.

Protests At Jamia Millia Islamia In 2019 Was An Unlawful Assembly: Court

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday held that the December 2019 protests organised at Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia was an unlawful assembly and the mob gathered at the spot with the intention to violate the law.

"The common object of the assembly was to march to the Parliament for registration of their protest against the Government policies of NRC and CAB where a curfew was imposed by the authorities," the Delhi High Court on Tuesday said, adding that making efforts to reach that area and carry out protest there was an "unlawful" object itself.

The Delhi High Court held the view while setting aside the order of the trial court discharging Sharjeel Imam and 10 others.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said that as per the prosecution, section 144 Cr.P.C. was already imposed in the area near Parliament.

"Therefore, making efforts to reach to a curfew imposed area and carry out protest therein was an unlawful object itself," justice Sharma held in the judgement.

The High Court while deciding the revision petition considered the video clips placed on record by the police as significant evidence.

The court said that the same was also brought to the notice of the crowd repeatedly by the concerned police officers by way of repeated announcements which can be clearly seen and heard in video clip number 2.

The high court also noted that the assembly was large and turned violent and pushed the barricades.

The court said, " Even otherwise, the mob was stopped by the police by creating a line of barricades, but the assembly had become so large and was pelting stones, was armed with tyres and dandas, and were shouting, standing on the barricades and violently pushing the same, and if at all they were trying to exercise the fundamental right of freedom of expression, by their unlawful acts of violence as discussed above their assembly had turned unlawful."

"Thus, the very means of achieving the object of reaching the Parliament, where prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr.P.C. was in place, were not lawful also," the court observed.

Thus, as contended on behalf of the state and visible from the video clips, the common unlawful object which was created at the spot was reaching the curfew-bound area and using force and violence against the police officers to achieve the said object, the court further observed.

The bench said that the main aim of their initial protest against the government policy was lost in the violence and in their persistence to break the law to reach a curfew-bound area by use of violence and force against people and objects.

The bench also held that the use of force and violence by the mob is sufficient, at prima facie stage of framing of charge, for constituting the offence of unlawful assembly and rioting.

The bench also noted from the video clips that the police were telling the assembly to protest peacefully.

The court said that nowhere in the video clips, the police officers are seen announcing that the protesters cannot protest, rather they were told to protest peacefully which was their right.

"However, the police were duty bound to stop them from proceeding to a place where section 144 Cr.P.C was imposed and also considering their violent behaviour, the apprehension and the fear that such violent mob while marching to the Parliament could be a threat to law and order situation in Delhi, cannot be found at fault at this stage as the behaviour of the crowd even in the video clips will show that such apprehension was not purely unfounded," the bench held.

On the basis of the video clips, the court held that the mob was trying to stop police from performing their duty of maintaining law and order.

The court said that it is also clear from the video clips that the mob was trying to stop the police officers from discharging their duty of maintaining law and order and were breaking the barricades and crossing over them, on which human chain of police was trying to hold on to so that the mob could not proceed to a curfew bound area.

"Therefore, they were doing their duty and they were stopped from doing so by pelting stones and by pushing the barricades against all of them," the court said.

The court pointed out, "Had the crowd of thousands of protesters been able to push the barricades against the police officers, in which they partly succeeded to, they would have caused grievous injuries to them considering how heavy the barricades are."

Justice Sharma held, " Prima facie, in the situation which is visible in the video clips including video clip number 3, the respondents in question are clearly visible being in the first line of the mob, pushing the barricades against the police officers and raising slogans.

"It is difficult to explain in words; the entire action being unfolded as it is clearly visible in the said video clip, the force used by Delhi Police is only of trying to hold on to the barricades against the violent mob which is also raising slogans of "Delhi Police Murdabad" and"Delhi Police Doob Maro" and are very violently pushing the barricades against the handful of policemen who were holding off the barricades," justice Sharma held.

The high court rejected the submissions that the accused persons were mere bystanders in the protest.

The court said that they were consciously part of the assembly which had turned violent and consciously did not leave the place of such violence and chose to remain part of it by insisting on going to a curfew-imposed area.

"They would have also known that while they were pushing the barricades against those few policemen, in case they would have succeeded, grievous injuries would have been caused to the police officers," the court added.

"They were, therefore, with the violent mob of protesters and it cannot be distinguished that they did not have the object collectively as that of the entire mob. Even otherwise to reiterate, the law of rioting envisages vicarious liability of each participant of an unlawful assembly, " Justice Sharma said.

An independent review into the culture at one of the UK's major National Health Service (NHS) hospital trusts on Tuesday recommended greater support for doctors in training who are concerned about their mental health, in the wake of the suicide of an Indian-origin doctor.

Dr Vaishnavi Kumar, who worked at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital, died aged 35 in June 2022.

Her inquest last year heard how she felt “belittled” at work and would come home and cry.

The University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust (UHB), which runs the hospital among several others in the region, was under an independent review following the death and amid wider performance-related concerns.

“In light of the tragic death by suicide of Dr Kumar – together with HEE [Health Education England], a review of the processes to support doctors in training who are concerned about their mental health, ability to speak up freely about concerns with colleagues and a clear message that they will be listened to,” reads one of the recommendations of the review.

The report notes that Kumar was a respected senior doctor in training, approximately one year from qualifying as a consultant diabetologist.

Her father, Ravi Kumar, also a doctor, told the Birmingham Coroner's Court that his daughter felt the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was a “hypercritical environment to work in”.

“We were told of considerable unrest and indeed anger at the Trust's response to this tragic event, from both Dr Kumar's family and the staff who worked with her and the wider junior doctor community… Our review also heard from several employees at the Trust who expressed their disappointment and anger at the lack of senior representation at Dr Kumar's funeral,” the report said.

It warns that "any continuance of a culture that is corrosively affecting morale and in particular threatens long-term staff recruitment and retention will put at risk the care of patients".

The report chaired by Professor Mike Bewick, a former deputy medical director at NHS England and now an independent consultant, was commissioned last year after a number of complaints were raised about the trust, which employs over 22,000 people across several sites and operates four major hospitals in the West Midlands region.

“We have been disturbed by the consistent reporting of a bullying culture at the Trust and look forward to the next phase of the review where staff and patients will have the opportunity to speak freely and confidentially about their concerns,” said Bewick.

A Cross Party Reference Group, chaired by British Sikh MP from Birmingham Preet Kaur Gill, will continue to work closely with Bewick throughout the rest of the process.

“Patients can continue to be confident that the care and treatment provided at our hospitals is safe. We are pleased that Prof Bewick's overall view ‘is that the Trust is a safe place to receive care',” said Jonathan Brotherton, Chief Executive of UHB.

“There are a number of significant concerns that we need to, and have started to, address; we will continue to learn from the past, as we move forward,” he said.

Opposition's New 'Resolution' After Uddhav Thackeray Pulls Out Of Dinner Meet

The opposition leaders will steer clear of commenting on sensitive topics like VD Savarkar, the Congress and representatives of 17 parties present at a strategy meet this evening have decided. The absence of Uddhav Thackeray loomed large over the dinner meet at Mallikarjun Kharge's home. Mr Thackeray -- upset over Rahul Gandhi's comment on VD Savarkar -- had pulled out of the meet earlier this evening.

"My name is not Savarkar, won't apologise," was Mr Gandhi's response after he got a two-year jail term over his over his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname and was disqualified as an MP.

The statement has deeply offended Mr Thackeray's party, which had objected earlier too about Mr Gandhi's comments on the right-wing icon. This evening, Mr Thackeray warned of a rift in the Opposition alliance in Maharashtra if Mr Gandhi did not "stop insulting our God".

"I want to tell Rahul Gandhi that we have come together, that's right, we have come together to save democracy and constitution in this country. But do not make any statements that will create fissures," he had said.

Sources said at the dinner meet, the Congress had indicated that it would take into account feelings of like-minded parties. Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi were also present at the meet and Mr Gandhi was one of the speakers, sources said.

Besides the Congress, members of the DMK, Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party, Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United, Telangana's ruling Bharat Raksha Samithi, RS, CPM, CPI, Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party, MDMK, KC, TMC, RSP, RJD, J&K NC, IUML, VCK, SP, JMM were present at the meet.

The guest list was a reminder of the opposition's rare gesture of rallying around Mr Gandhi at a critical moment. But his unfiltered comments had upset the Maharashtra ally, leading to the prompt damage control measure, sources indicated.

Many of the opposition leaders, however, made it clear that this was an issue-based support to the Congress and not a gesture to be read in the context of the 2024 general elections.

"The question of walking together is due symbolism, which we undertook today - a special mark of solidarity against coordinated and undemocratic attacks on everyone," Trinamool's Jawahar Sircar had said.

The Congress, however, spoke of a broader agenda.

"Tonight floor leaders of 18 Oppn parties met at the residence of kharge ji and with ONE voice decided to continue with their campaign against the Modi regime that is destroying democracy & that has subverted all institutions. They expressed their collective resolve to combat Modi's politics of fear & intimidation. This resolve will be reflected in joint actions outside Parliament beginning NOW," tweeted the party's communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh.

"What's Wrong In It?": Congress's BV Srinivas Defends "Darling" Remark

After his remarks about Smriti Irani stirred up a controversy, Srinivas BV, president, Indian Youth Congress clarified on Monday that when price of a gas cylinder was Rs 400, she used to talk about 'mehangayi daayan' and now when the price has reached Rs 1,100, that 'daayan' has now become a darling adding that this is what he said and what was wrong in it?

Mr Srinivas on Sunday, during Congress' Satyagrah near Rajghat, lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party over the inflation issue and said that the party means 'Mehengayi'.

Referring to Union Minister Smriti Irani he said, "In 2014, these people used to say 'Mehengayi Daayan Hai', now Ussi Mehengayi Ko Darling Bana Kar Bedroom Me Bithaane Ka Kaam Kiya (they have made inflation their darling and made her sit in their bedroom)."

The remarks of the Youth Congress president received heavy backlash from the BJP, with party leader Amit Malviya saying that the remarks are "sexist".

Taking to Twitter, he shared a clipping of Mr Srinivas' speech and said, "This uncouth, sexist man is President of the Indian Youth Congress. Darling Bana Kar Bedroom Me... This is the level of discourse, when referring to a woman minister, just because she defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi. A frustrated Congress is hurtling down the path of irrelevance."

Besides this, Srinivas' remarks were also criticized by former Defence Minister AK Antony's son, and former Congress leader Anil Antony, who termed the remarks as "shameful".

"This is the 'women empowerment' @INCIndia @INCKerala way. Shameful that someone can speak like this about any woman," Anil Antony said in a tweet.

In reply, the IYC president asked the BJP leaders to play his full speech and not a clipping of it.

Gujarat Congress MLA Fined Rs 99 For Tearing PM's Photo During Protest

A court in Gujarat's Navsari fined Congress MLA Anant Patel Rs 99 in a 2017 case in which he was accused of entering the chamber of the vice chancellor of an agriculture university and tearing the photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a students' protest.

The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate VA Dhadhal found Mr Patel, an MLA from Vansda (Scheduled Caste) seat, guilty under Section 447 of the Indian Penal Code for criminal trespass.

Mr Patel and six others, including members of the Youth Congress, were booked under IPC Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 353 (assault), 427 (mischief causing loss of Rs 50 upwards), 447 (criminal trespass) and 504 (intentional insult) by Jalalpore police in May 2017.

Mr Patel and the others were accused of entering the office of the vice chancellor of Navsari Agriculture University during a student protest, behaving in an unruly manner and tearing a photo of PM Modi kept on the VC's table.

The court found three of the accused guilty of criminal trespass and ordered them to deposit a fine of Rs 99, failing which they will have to face simple imprisonment of seven days.

The prosecution sought maximum punishment for Mr Patel under Section 447 of IPC, which is a jail term of up to three months and a fine of Rs 500.

The defence, however. claimed the FIR was a result of political vendetta as the accused are members of the opposition Congress.

Centre Gave SBI Rs 8,800 Crore Without Lender Asking For It, Says Auditor

The Department of Financial Services (DFS) had given Rs 8,800 crore to State Bank of India as part of recapitalisation exercise without the country's biggest lender asking for such funds in FY18, a CAG report presented in Parliament on Monday said.

The department under the finance ministry did not conduct assessment of the capital requirement as per its own standard practice before recapitalisation, as per the Compliance Audit Report No. 1 of 2023 of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Union Government (Economic and Service Ministries - Civil) for the year ended March 2021.

"DFS infused Rs 8,800 crore into SBI in 2017-18 for credit growth considering it the largest PSB in the country even though there was no demand. DFS did not conduct assessment of the capital requirement as per its own standard practice before recapitalisation," it said.

The report further said DFS considered cushion over and above the norms prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) while recapitalising PSBs.

"RBI had already prescribed enhanced capital requirement of additional 1 per cent on banks in India. This resulted in excess infusion of Rs 7,785.81 crore," it said.

DFS infused Rs 831 crore into Bank of Maharashtra in 2019-20 against the bank's demand of Rs 798 crore to avoid surrender of funds amounting to Rs 33 crore, it added.

The government recapitalises public sector banks (PSBs) for credit growth, meeting the requirement for regulatory capital, equipping better performing lenders placed under Reserve Bank of India's Prompt Corrective Action framework to come out of it and meeting capital requirement on account of amalgamation.

"We Will Keep Fighting": Ashok Gehlot On Rahul Gandhi Disqualification

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Sunday slammed the BJP over its allegation that Rahul Gandhi insulted OBCs with his "Modi surname" remark in 2019 and said his party has done a lot for the backward classes, including making an OBC leader like him Chief Minister thrice.

He also pointed out that his Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel was also an OBC.

Rahul Gandhi was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark. He was later disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case.

Several BJP leaders, including party chief J P Nadda, have accused Rahul Gandhi of insulting Other Backward Classes (OBCs) with his remark.

Addressing a gathering at the Congress' day-long "Sankalp Satyagraha" at Rajghat, Mr Gehlot said Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an "experiment" during the Gujarat polls in 2017 by saying that a Congress leader abused him and highlighted his OBC status.

In a repeat of that experiment, the BJP is claiming again before elections that Rahul Gandhi insulted OBCs, Mr Gehlot said.

"In 2017, when the BJP was losing the Gujarat elections, Modi ji played the OBC card against the Congress there. The BJP today again wants to run a campaign to mislead the OBCs," he alleged.

"Are fugitives like Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi OBCs?" he asked. "You are protecting fugitives such as Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, and then saying Rahul Gandhi insulted OBCs. Can anyone forget what the Congress has done for OBCs, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes," Mr Gehlot posed.

"I have been made Chief Minister for the third time by Sonia ji and Rahul ji. I am an OBC. There is only one member of the OBC Mali community (in the assembly) and that is me," Mr Gehlot said what "bigger message" could be there for the OBCs than him being made chief minister again and again.

Elections are near and that is why they are raising this bogey of OBC insult, he alleged. "It is baseless." Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also tweeted a video of Gehlot's remarks on the BJP's OBC charge.

In a tweet in Hindi, Jairam Ramesh also said, "Difference between words and actions! In 1992, the Congress government implemented the Mandal Commission. In 2006, the Congress government made a provision for reservation for OBCs in higher education. During 2011-12, the caste census of about 25 crore families was done by the Congress government."

"Whereas BJP has stopped the caste census," he added.

In his remarks, Mr Gehlot said the sacrifices of the Gandhi family are before everyone and Rahul Gandhi is constantly raising the issue of unemployment and high prices.

"They could not answer allegations raised by Rahul Gandhi in Parliament. I have never seen before that allegations are raised but instead of answering the prime minister has taken a vow of silence," Mr Gehlot said.

The BJP made allegations against Gandhi for his remarks abroad when he said what he had been saying in the country. It is the prime minister who should answer and apologise, he said.

"Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the voice of the country. We will keep fighting to ensure that democracy is kept alive in the country," the Rajasthan chief minister said.

Whoever Tries To Disturb Peace In Punjab Won't Be Spared: Arvind Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday said the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab will not hesitate in taking tough decisions to maintain law and order as he asserted that those who were trying to spoil the atmosphere in the state are on the run.

Arvind Kejriwal's remarks come in the wake of Punjab police action against radical preacher Amritpal Singh and elements of an outfit, headed by him, named 'Waris Punjab De.' AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was in Jalandhar, where the crackdown on the Khalistan sympathiser began on Saturday, to lay the foundation stone of Sri Guru Ravidas Bani Adhyan Centre at Dera Sachkhand Ballan here.

Addressing the gathering, Arvind Kejriwal said whoever tries to disturb peace in Punjab will not be spared.

"In the past few days, you saw how some people tried to disturb peace in Punjab," he said.

"We do not have to allow the atmosphere to be spoiled at any cost," he said, adding, "We have to maintain peace, law and order in Punjab." Arvind Kejriwal said the Mann government took tough decisions to maintain peace in the state.

"Sometimes, tough decisions have to be taken. But if our AAP government in Punjab under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann will have to take tough decisions then we will not hesitate from taking them," he added.

"Mann saab took tough decisions, but without a bullet being fired and blood being shed peace is maintained in the entire Punjab today," he said.

Amritpal Singh has been on the run after the police crackdown began. Several images and videos have showed him taking multiple vehicles to dodge police. The Punjab government has slapped the strictest National Security Act against him and some of his associates.

While the fugitive's whereabouts are still unknown, Punjab police say efforts are on to nab him.

Leh-Manali Highway Reopens For Traffic In A Record Time Of 138 Days

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) opened the Leh-Manali Highway (NH3) for traffic, in a record time of 138 days, on Saturday.

The 427-km strategic Leh-Manali Highway (NH3) connects Ladakh to the rest of India via Manali.

The highway is strategic as it facilitates the movement of the armed forces and their supplies and wares to forward areas in the Ladakh region, bordering both China and Pakistan, as well as connecting Ladakh to the rest of India.

The highway is an alternate axis to the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway.

NH-1D, 422 km was opened by the BRO on March 16, 2023, and traffic has commenced on this axis. With the onset of winter and snow accumulation, the highway remains closed from November-end till it is opened to traffic by the BRO.

The entire snow clearance operations were executed by the BRO, under 'Project Himank' in Ladakh and 'Project Deepak' in Himachal Pradesh. The challenging snow-clearing operation commenced from two extremities and were carried out by two different teams, comprising skilled manpower and state-of-the-art machines.

'Project Deepak' was undertaken from Manali to Sarchu (Border of Ladakh and Himachal) and 'Project Himank' involved the clearing of the highway from Leh to Sarchu.

'Karmyogis' of both units worked in extremely challenging conditions, braving snow storms and high altitude areas, to clear the highway. They had to negotiate four important and high-altitude passes -- the Baralacha La (15910 ft), Nakee La (15547 ft), Lachung La (16616 ft) and Tanglang La (17482 ft).

A significant time of snow clearance was consumed in the clearance of these high mountain passes where the precipitation was more and the teams encountered snow walls of height 10-15 feet, stated a release on Saturday.

BRO, with a renewed focus on the early opening of all strategic roads and passes, has been progressively reducing the closure duration and opening the road earlier than the previous years.

In 2022 the road was opened for traffic move on March 26 and the BRO broke its own record in 2023 by reopening the road on Saturday.

As the two snow clearance teams converge to a common point, which is also the inter-project boundaries, a 'Golden Handshake' ceremony was organised at Sarchu on Saturday, in which the chief engineers of Project Himank, Brig Gaurav Karki, VSM and officiating chief engineer, 'Project Deepak', Col Vishal Guleria, cut the ribbon and declared the highway clear of snow and open.

"Give Driver's Seat To Strong Regional Parties": Tejashwi Yadav To Congress

Bihar deputy chief minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday said the Congress is the biggest party in the Opposition but wherever regional parties are strong, they should be allowed to sit in the "driver's seat" to take on the BJP in the 2024 general elections.

Yadav also said that former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad and current CM Nitish Kumar along with him were making efforts to bring together regional parties and the Congress.

"The Congress is part of the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar. In Bihar, we are the bigger party but the Congress is the biggest Opposition party in the country. Lalu ji, Nitish ji and all of us are making efforts that Congress and regional parties come together and to decide as to what is the way forward," Yadav told reporters in response to a question while leaving the CBI headquarters where he was quizzed for more than eight hours.

"One thing is clear, we have said it earlier also, wherever regional parties are strong they have to be in the driver's seat, the Congress people should understand this," Yadav said.

Wherever there is a direct fight with the BJP, the Congress should take on them, he said, adding, there are approximately 200 such seats.

Yadav was quizzed by the CBI for more than eight hours in connection with a railways land-for-jobs scam case here.

Asked about his questioning, the RJD leader said his family has always cooperated with the probe and answered all questions that were asked of them.

"The truth is that there was no scam, this is clear ... Everyone knows why all this is happening," he said.

His remarks came on a day when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stressed on opposition unity and called on all opposition parties to work together.

Gandhi also noted that the ruling dispensation has given them a "big weapon" by disqualifying him from Lok Sabha.

Gandhi also thanked several opposition parties for extending their support to him in the wake of his conviction in a defamation case and disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

The Congress on Friday welcomed the statements of opposition leaders condemning Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha and said it was now time for the party to take on the job of building the opposition unity in a "systematic way."

Despite India's Request, Pak Continues To Levy Fees On Kartarpur Pilgrims

Minister of State External Affairs V Muraleedharan on Thursday said that despite the Government of India's insistence, Pakistan continues to levy fees on the pilgrims who visit Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur through Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

"Representations have been received to make the visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur through Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor passport-free. However, the Bilateral Agreement signed between India and Pakistan on October 24, 2019 mandates that pilgrims shall travel on a valid passport," said MoS External Affairs V Muraleedharan.

The MoS made the above remarks in his response to a query by Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal who inquired if the government had any plans to make the visit to Kartarpur Sahib passport-free for Sikh pilgrims who wanted to visit the holy site from across the globe.

The MoS MEA also highlighted several steps taken to facilitate the visit of pilgrims stating, "The Agreement, inter alia, provides for visa-free travel of Indian pilgrims as well as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, from India to the holy Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan on a daily basis, throughout the year. To facilitate the visit of pilgrims, a state-of-the-art infrastructure, including a highway from the town of Dera Baba Nanak to Zero Point and an Integrated Check Post (ICP) has been built on the Indian side."

Despite the request by India, Pakistan continues to charge pilgrims from India for each visit. "The Government of India has consistently urged the Government of Pakistan that in deference to the wishes of the pilgrims, it should not levy any fee or charge on the pilgrims who visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur through Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. Pakistan, however, continues to levy USD 20 on every pilgrim for each visit," Muraleedharan tells Badal in his reply.

An Agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the facilitation of pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Pakistan, was signed on October 24, 2019, in order to fulfil the long-standing demand of Indian citizens and Overseas Citizen of India, to have easy and smooth access to the holy Gurudwara and to operationalise the corridor in time for the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Since its inauguration on November 9, 2019, Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor has been used by around 1,70,000 pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur. Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor remains functional on all seven days of the week.

Incidentally, Harsimrat Kaur, Badal, who was a minister in the Modi cabinet at that time had travelled with the first delegation of pilgrims that visited the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

Congress Has Promoted "Naxalism And Terrorism": Yogi Adityanath

The Congress cannot digest that sons of the poor, Dalit and backward classes are reaching the highest positions in the country, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Friday, a day after Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a criminal defamation case for his "Modi surname" remark.

Addressing a rally here in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he attacked the opposition party, saying it has always done "politics of dividing the country" and has promoted "naxalism and terrorism" for its political gains.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified the Congress leader as MP from Wayanad in Kerala after he was convicted in the 2019 case and sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Surat court on Thursday for his remark "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Following his disqualification, he would not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction and sentence.

"The nation has been witness to how former Congress president Rahul Gandhi gave a statement against Dalits, poor, backward and underprivileged, throwing parliamentary decorum to the winds and stooped to the level of contempt of court," the chief minister said.

"The Congress must apologise to the country for insulting the poor, Dalits and backward people," he said in his address at the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University grounds after the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of projects worth Rs 1,780 crore.

India is presiding over G20, a group of the 20 most powerful countries of the world, and this is proof of India's growing influence globally, Mr Adityanath said.

"Not only the country but the world is seeing the new power of India. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India has set a new example in front of the world," the chief minister said.

"While on one hand the world is feeling proud of India's progress and is eager to adopt its model (of development), on the other, there are some people who criticise the state despite having ruled it for generations," he said.

Referring to Gandhi's remarks in the UK, Mr Adityanath said that "they even have no qualms in putting India in the dock itself when they go abroad".

On Congress statements on electronic voting machines, he said, "The Congress is questioning EVMs with which they got the privilege of forming government (at the Centre) in 2004 and 2009." "The party (Congress) is upset that India is developing. It is their habit to put barriers at every level in every campaign of the prime minister," the chief minister said.

"The Congress never thought about the development of the country. These people always tried to divide the country in the name of caste, religion and language. They set new records of corruption during their tenure," he said.

Today, when India is going to shine at the global level, these people are obstructing the progress of the country by defaming it, he said referring to India hosting the G20 Summit.

While the Congress is increasing disharmony among castes, the government of today has been moving forward with the motto "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas" for the last nine years without any discrimination, Mr Adityanath said.

Housing, toilets, ration, cooking gas and electricity connections to the poor are being provided now, he said and added that whether it is the Ayushman Bharat scheme or other facilities of development, all these are reaching everyone equally without any discrimination.

The chief minister said the prime minister has come to here today to give the city a new and grand look through the projects.

He said in the last nine years, projects worth Rs 35,000 crores have either been completed or are about to be inaugurated in Kashi alone. These will be dedicated to the people of Kashi in the next visit of Modi, Mr Adityanath said.

Punjab Police Releases 44 Who Had "Minimum Role" In Amritpal Singh Case

Punjab Police on Friday said they have released 44 people taken into preventive custody during a crackdown on radical preacher Amritpal Singh and handed them over to their family.

"In the larger interest of the public and keeping in view that youngsters should not suffer, Punjab Police have decided to release those persons who have a minimum role or were just following Amritpal Singh on religious sentiments only," said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla.

Mr Shukla said in a statement that 44 people, who were under preventive custody, were released and handed over to their family members on Friday following a promise of good conduct in future.

On Thursday, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill said that Punjab Police might release 177 people from preventive custody.

A total of 207 people were taken into custody for allegedly disturbing peace and harmony. Of them, 30 have been found involved in major criminal activities and remaining were under preventive custody, police said.

Chief Minister Punjab Bhagwant Mann has given clear instructions to police to not harass innocent people during the crackdown on Amritpal Singh and his outfit 'Waris Punjab De', according to an official statement.

Last month, Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of Amritsar and clashed with police for the release of one of his aides.

Last week, the Punjab Police launched a crackdown against them and Amritpal Singh has been on the run since. Punjab Police said efforts were on to catch the fugitive.

Will Challenge "Erroneous" Judgment: Congress On Rahul Gandhi Conviction

The conviction of Rahul Gandhi by a Surat court in a defamation case was "erroneous and unsustainable" and will be challenged in a higher court, the Congress said on Thursday while expressing hope that the judgment will be stayed and quashed.

Mr Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by the court in the 2019 criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark, in a setback to the Lok Sabha MP who faces the risk of disqualification. The case was filed against him on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the trial court has given a 170-page judgment that is still subject to translation and the party is working towards filing an appeal against it in a higher court.

"We believe that this is full of errors and legally unsustainable in conclusion. But make no mistake generally...all your (government's) efforts to create a chilling effect, a throttling effect, strangulating effect on open, fearless speech relating to public interest will not stop either Rahul Gandhi or the Congress party," he told reporters at a press conference here.

Mr Singhvi said the Congress has faith in the judiciary and will seek legal recourse to the Surat court's verdict and get relief.

Though this judgment is "erroneous", in-built corrective measures exist within the judicial system and "we will certainly invoke them", he said and added, "We are confident that the conviction will be stayed." Gandhi after appearing before the Surat court returned to Delhi and was accorded a welcome at the domestic airport on his arrival. Some Congress MPs and leaders who were present at the airport, later held a meeting with him at his residence, sources said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge later convened a meeting of top party leaders at his residence and discussed the situation arising out of Gandhi's conviction and whether he should attend Parliament.

Sources said the discussion took place as Mr Gandhi faces disqualification from Lok Sabha in the wake of his conviction and two years sentence.

The Supreme Court in a 2013 verdict had said that any MP or MLA stands disqualified from the time of his conviction if a sentence of two or more years is pronounced.

Mr Kharge also alleged that the BJP-led government wants to get Mr Gandhi removed from Lok Sabha through disqualification as he speaks the truth.

Speaking at a book launch function, he said now "attempts are being made by taking refuge under laws to silence everyone".

"They (government) want to get him ousted (from Lok Sabha. The person who speaks the truth and exposes you, you want to remove him through such means. Nobody gets two years jail for defamation, someone is given one year, six months, or apology is sought, but the provision for (disqualification) is two years and that is why they have applied it in complete," Mr Kharge said.

The BJP, however, asserted that the law has to take its course if Rahul Gandhi abuses people and slammed the Congress over its criticism of his conviction in a defamation case, asking whether the opposition party wants "complete freedom" for him to "abuse" others.

BJP leader and former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad cautioned Mr Gandhi, saying he will find himself facing "more troubles" if he doesn't refrain from making defamatory remarks, while Union Minister Piyush Goyal asked the Congress leader to apologise for his series of "defamatory" comments.

Both leaders also hit out at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for questioning the court's order and accused him of contempt of court.

Mr Gandhi after attending court quoted Mahatma Gandhi on truth and non-violence.

"My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, non-violence the means to get to it -- Mahatma Gandhi," Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi soon after the court's verdict.

In another tweet, he paid tributes to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on their martyrdom day and said he has learnt fighting fearlessly for the country from these brave sons of Mother India.

"Coward, dictatorial BJP government is incensed at Rahul Gandhi and Opposition because we are exposing their misdeeds and demanding a JPC," Mr Kharge tweeted. "Under its political bankruptcy, the Modi government sends police, ED and imposes cases on political speeches. We will appeal in the higher court," he added.

"We knew such a thing could happen... they kept changing judges. But we have faith in the judiciary and will fight as per the law," the Congress president said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to Twitter to back her brother and attack the BJP.

In a tweet in Hindi, she said that "a scared machinery of power is trying to suppress the voice of Rahul Gandhi through 'saam, daam, dand, bhed' (using every trick in the book)".

"My brother has never been afraid, nor will he ever be. He has lived his life speaking the truth, will continue to speak the truth, will continue to raise the voice of the people of the country," she said.

Congress general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh said, "This is new India, if you raise your voice against injustice, then ED-CBI, police, FIR will be imposed. Rahul Gandhi is also being punished for speaking the truth, for raising his voice against a dictator." He said this is not just a legal issue but also a political one and termed it yet another example of the politics of vendetta, fear and intimidation.

In Parliament, this government is relying on one set of techniques to throttle voices and if outside Parliament, a second set of tactics is being used which in recent times has had an effect inside Parliament too, Singhvi alleged and added that the third strategy of the government is to "file false, frivolous and vexatious" cases.

"No doubt there is a conviction, but this is an infirm, an erroneous and an unsustainable judgment. It will be challenged and we are hopeful it will be stayed and ultimately quashed," the Congress leader said.

He said he has no doubts that when it comes to Rahul Gandhi, this government will do everything which is "unethical and is devoid of principles".

Mr Singhvi said any reasonable, fair, non-oppressive, non-bias system would give sufficient time to a person to take some legal steps to stay the conviction. "But, I doubt very much if this government will act in any of those four objectives, non-biased, fair, transparent or balanced," he said.

Asked about the issue of Gandhi be disqualified, he said as far as the government is concerned, Gandhi has sought to be de-facto excluded from Parliament already for last several days and weeks.

"What is the point of him going to Parliament and speaking where he is not allowed to speak before a prior apology. What is the point of supposedly talking in Parliament when the government of the day itself is disrupting it," he asked.

"So, de-facto there is no difference between him not speaking in Parliament and not formally entering Parliament. However, these are legal issues and the judgment has come today and some time needs to be given to a person to challenge it," Mr Singhvi said.

Attempt To "Suppress" Opposition: Sharad Pawar On Rahul Gandhi's Jail Term

NCP supremo Sharad Pawar came out in support of Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, saying his conviction in a criminal defamation case was an attempt to "suppress the voice" of opposition leaders.

Mr Pawar also drew parallels between the conviction of Gandhi and NCP leader and former Lok Sabha member from Lakshadweep PP Mohammed Faizal, who was disqualified from the lower house after his conviction in an attempt-to-murder case.

"I express my serious concerns at the attempts to curtail fundamental rights, freedom of speech and democratic expression in the country. The repeated attempts to suppress the voice of political parties, leaders and citizens of India is a matter of grave concern," Mr Pawar said.

"Today's judgment of Rahul Gandhi underscores the point. NCP MP PP Mohammed Faizal's case is also a similar case in point. I deplore this new trend in our political landscape, which should concern everyone in today's scenario," the Rajya Sabha member said.

Mr Faizal was disqualified as member of the Lok Sabha within two days of his conviction on January 11.

The disqualification was not revoked even after Mr Faizal appealed to the Kerala High Court for a stay on his conviction and sentence, which the high court suspended on January 25.

On Thursday, a trial court in Gujarat sentenced Mr Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark. The Lok Sabha member too faces the risk of disqualification.

The Surat court has granted Gandhi bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court. The Congress said Gandhi will file an appeal against the verdict.

"Nothing Discussed": Odisha Chief Minister On Forming Opposition Front

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said nothing has been discussed as yet on forming an opposition front ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Mr Patnaik's statement came ahead of his scheduled “courtesy meeting” with Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Thursday.

Asked whether any discussion on forming a ‘third front' is on the cards with the West Bengal chief minister, the BJD president told reporters: “Nothing has been discussed as yet.” The TMC has decided to maintain distance from both the BJP and the Congress and Ms Banerjee last week held a meeting with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Kolkata.

The SP is also following a policy of maintaining equidistance from the two major political camps.

The TMC supremo reached Odisha on Tuesday evening on a three-day visit during which she will also offer puja at the Jagannath temple in Puri.

Before leaving for Bhubaneswar, Ms Banerjee told reporters at the Kolkata airport that she will hold a "courtesy meeting" with Mr Patnaik.

BJP "Stoking Fear In Minds Of Hindus For Political Gains": Tejashwi Yadav

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on the BJP inside the state assembly where he charged the opposition party with stoking "fear in the minds of Hindus" for political gains.

Tejashwi Yadav was replying to the debate on budgetary allocation for the health department, a portfolio that he holds, amid a walkout by the BJP on the second consecutive day.

"I had said a lot yesterday and I had hoped that the opposition leaders will be around today to take the debate forward. But they chose to run away. They have not even moved a cut motion. I will say something about them towards the end of my statement," Mr Yadav told the Chair before launching into a speech that ran for over 20 minutes.

Outside the assembly, Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha insisted that the walkout followed "the government's refusal to entertain a host of issues raised by us, including alleged involvement of a minister in a murder case and corruption cases against the Deputy CM himself".

"Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has surrendered before his new ally (RJD) and the state is reverting to the era of lawlessness from which we had pulled it out with so much of effort," alleged the BJP leader, whose party was stripped of power when Nitish Kumar snapped ties in August last year.

He also alleged that Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary, who belongs to the RJD, had been running the House in a partisan manner.

When pointed out that Mr Yadav has sought an apology for having been proven wrong on allegations of attacks on migrants in Tamil Nadu, Sinha stood his ground saying "the report of the team of officials that toured that state should be tabled inside the House for discussion".

Inside the House, Mr Yadav ended his speech, after which the budgetary demand for the health department was passed by a voice vote, tearing into the opposition party.

"The BJP likes to thrive in a paradox wherein people shall remain happy as Hindus despite being unemployed and having to survive on five kilograms of free ration. Hindus comprise 85 per cent of the population and the BJP instils in them fear of the remaining 15 per cent so that they remain beholden to the party", said Mr Yadav.

Lalu Yadav, who had promised 10 lakh jobs to the state's youth, which helped him catch the public imagination in the 2020 assembly polls and propelled the RJD to the position of the single largest party, also told the House that the government was planning to provide employment to 1.6 lakh people in the health department itself.

"I am grateful to the Honourable Chief Minister who is present here and has fully supported me in fulfilling the promise of 10 lakh jobs. He has personally presided over a function where appointment letters were given to more than 10,000 recruits in the health department", the Deputy Chief Minister added.

He, however, made it clear that the government will not tolerate laxity on part of employees and pointed out that "action has been initiated against 700 doctors who have been absent from duty for long. In one cabinet meeting, termination orders were passed for 70 of such erratic officials".

He also disclosed that plans were afoot for an "emergency cadre" to ensure that patients do not suffer during unforeseen circumstances like strikes. In addition, a new "referral policy" was shaping up to put a check on the practice of doctors in other districts referring patients to Patna at the drop of a hat.

"We are also trying to put in place conditions wherein more and more medical facilities become available in various districts. This would further de-congest the hospitals in the state capital," said Lalu Yadav.

He also said that the government was sensitive to the fact that a large number of employees in the health department were women for the benefit of whom sanitary pad vending machines were being installed at hospitals.

"We are also considering a proposal to make these vending machines available to women admitted to the health centres," said the young leader.

2nd Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft Launched In Kolkata

The second anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC) named INS Androth was launched at Garden Reach Ship Builders in Kolkata

It is used to protect the coastal low draft region wherever they are deployed. The first one Arnala was launched last year.

The primary role of the ASW SWC is to conduct anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine laying operations. These ships are also capable of full-scale sub surface surveillance of coastal waters and various surface platforms and coordinated ASW operations with aircraft.

The INS Androth highlighted the strategic importance of the chain of 36 islands in the Arabian Sea that are integral part of Indian territory.

These ships are 77.6 meters long and 10.5 meters wide and require a draught of only 2.7 metres. Propelled by three diesel-driven water jets, these ships can attain a maximum speed of 25 knots.

These ships may be smaller in size but will pack a lethal punch. They will carry lightweight torpedoes, ASW rockets and mines, close-in weapon system (30 mm gun) and 16.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled guns. The ASW SWC will be fitted with hull mounted sonar and a low frequency variable depth sonar.

Several Pro-Khalistani Leaders' Twitter Accounts Blocked In India

Pro-Khalistan Twitter accounts have been withheld in India. The withheld accounts include the Twitter accounts of Canada's New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh. The Twitter accounts of Canadian poet Rupi Kaur, the voluntary organisation United Sikhs, and Canada-based activist Gurdeep Singh Sahota have also been blocked.

When anyone tries to access these Twitter accounts from India, it says they have been withheld in response to a legal demand.

The blocking of Jagmeet Singh's account is significant as he is known for his anti-India comments. The development comes at a time when there has been a rise in attacks by these Khalistani elements in foreign countries.

Khalistani supporters vandalised the Indian High Commission in London on Sunday. After vandalism in London, Khalistani supporters allegedly attacked Indian Consulate in San Francisco (SFO). Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media.

Visuals shared online showed a huge mob brandishing Khalistan flags mounted on wooden poles, using it to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans as they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

India has launched a strong protest with the United Kingdom over the vandalisation incident at the Indian High Commission in London, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said on Monday.

Responding to queries during a media briefing on Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's visit here, the Foreign Secretary said that the British Deputy High Commissioner was summoned on Sunday to convey India's concerns.

"With regard to the UK incident, we have already put out yesterday late evening India's response to it in which UK Deputy High Commissioner was summoned...demanding an explanation and asking the culprits and the perpetrators of what happened at London yesterday to be quickly arrested and prosecuted," the Foreign Secretary said.

"We launched a strong protest and also clearly indicated to the British authorities for the need for them to put up adequate security at the UK High Commission," he added.

On Sunday, the senior-most UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned to convey India's strong protest at the actions taken by separatist and anti-India elements against the Indian High Commission in London.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said that explanation was demanded "for the complete absence" of British security that allowed these separatist and extremist elements to enter the High Commission premises.

"She was reminded in this regard of the basic obligations of the UK Government under the Vienna Convention. India finds unacceptable the indifference of the UK Government to the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK," the MEA statement said.

"It is expected that the British Government would take steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each one of those involved in the incident, and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents," it added.
